Jesse's No Silly Billy!
Neighbours nice guy Billy Kennedy, aka Jesse Spencer, interrupts his surfing spree (honest!) for a tongue way with L&K…
What’s been your best moment on Neighbours so far?
The whole experience is amazing and the things I’ve learnt from the other actors are incredible. I’ve just found it all really fun.
What about ur proudest acting moment?
I did a scene which was meant to be fairly sad and luckily some real emotional thing came over me and I started crying. In another one I was meant to be laughing with Toadfish at this book and just wasn’t funny – but for some reason we both started cracking up and laughing soooo hard. You know, like when you’ve done the best you can.
Do you ever watch yourself on telly?
Yeah. It’s important to see the finished product cos that’s all the audience sees. They don’t see all the hard work and slog that goes behind it. And it’s important to see what works and how you play off other characters.
Have you ever thought, ‘I wish I’d never gotten into this acting malarkey’?
No, but I’ve had times where I’ve thought, ‘Oh God this is hard work!’ or felt a bit down when somthing bad’s happened. But that’s the case with any job.
Is it easier to get girlfriends now you’re on TV?
With some girls it is, but others just don’t care. I don’t like using the show to my advantage. If I saw a nice girl at a party I wouldn’t walk up to her and say ‘Hi! I’m off Neighbours! Do you want to go out with me?!’ I just don’t do that. If a girl likes me there’s got to be a genuine reason for it. But it would worry me if she preferred Billy to me!
Would you ever wear girl’s clothing for an acting role?
Sure! I’m not afraid to try new things! As long as people know I’m just acting and that I don’t do it all the time. And I hope I’d remember to change before I left the set and not go home wearing my make-up on the bus!
Are snoggy scenes fun?
The first kissing scene I did was fairly awkward with all the crew watching but the girl who plays my girlfriend is really cool and we get along really well so no worries once we’d broken the ice!
Have you ever been sent weird letters from girl fans?
I’ve had a few. I find it hard to understand why they send them cos when I was younger I never wrote to famous people. I figured that they weren’t really available so that there wasn’t much point in bothering.
Do you mind your picture being pinned to girls bedroom walls?
It’s fine by me, although I’ve never walked into some girl’s room and seen my posters anywhere. Before Neighbours I’d have thought, ‘Why do you want a picture of me?!’ But you just get used to it.
Is it difficult fitting all your school work in?
Yeah. I might get up at six in the morning and go to work, then on to school, back to work and home to do more school work and learn my lines. By the time I get to bed I’m so tired!
What are your plans for the future?
It’s pretty hard to tell. I wouldn’t mind getting into film cos it’s so different from TV. We film 24 scenes a day and really have to rush. With film you do one scene a day and get heaps of time to explore your character.
- Although Billy’s 15, Jesse is actually a strapping 16-year-old.
- He’s got two older brothers and a younger sister.
- While Billy’s a birrova country bumpkin, Jesse prefers hanging out in the city.
- Before winning the role of Billy, Jesse auditioned to play Brett Stark!
- Neighbours isn’t just Jesse’s first Tv job – it’s his first speakign acting role.
- Jesse’s sister watches Neighbours more than he does!
- Off-screen, he likes bashing his drums! Wa-hey!
