What a class act!
Neighbours favourite Jesse juggles school, scripts… and an apple or two for Emma.
Neighbours’ Jesse Spencer doesn’t need any reminding that his Year 12 exams are just around the corner. But In case he’d forgotten for a moment, Emma Harrison (who plays Joanna Hartman) was happy to play teacher, adorned with robe and motherboard.
Ever the charmer 17-year-old Jesse came prepared with an apple and his winning smile, which has won the hearts of thousands of girls whose letters fill the show’s mailbags each week.
Jesse plays Billy Kennedy on Network Ten soap and attends Scotch College in Melbourne, which leaves him little, if any, free time.
“It’s very hard at the moment. It’s like having two full-time jobs,” he says. “I’m doing Year 12 over two years, but I’ve still got three exams in November, so when I’m not working all I do is study.”
“During breaks in filming they take me back to school so I”m probably there half time I should be.”
But Jesse is not complaining.
“Yeah, I”ve made sacrifices, but it doesn’t phase me, because I’ll have plenty of time to do all that when I’m older,” he says. “Hard work never killed anyone.”
Jesse says his fellow cast members believe how studious he is.
“I’m probably the first person they’ve had on set who takes school really seriously, so it’s new for them.”
One thing Jesse doesn’t consider important is his popularity on the show and the hype that surrounds young, good-looking soap stars.
“I don’t really get involved in my own publicity – it just happens, but I don’t take much notice,” he says. “I get recognized now and then, but when it happens I just think ’So what’. But I do have to be careful if I’m walking around a hundred 14-year-old girls.”
